A Big Step Forward at Matthew House
Matthew House is a small shelter in central Toronto that welcomes and assists refugee claimants who have come to the end of a long journey on the refugee highway. Since opening as a permanent home in August 1998, Matthew House has provided shelter and assistance for hundreds of newly arrived refugees who would otherwise have been homeless in Toronto. They have come from more than 70 different countries including: Albania, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Angola, Burundi, Colombia, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zanzibar.
The end of each month brings a big challenge for residents and staff at Matthew House. How to move residents and furniture without a van? Thanks to The Grocery Foundation’s gift, Matthew House is the proud owner of a brand new GMC Savana van as well as much needed upgrades of furniture including matching sofa sets and new mattresses.

Kitchener,
ON - The Grocery Industry Foundation

has made a donation of $50,000 to be paid over two years
to St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation to assist
in the purchase of a CT Scanner. GIFT aims to make life
better for children by supporting worthy project in
communities in Ontario and eastern Canada. The annual
Cash For Kids coupon campaign in 1700 grocery stores
during February raised over a million dollars, and this
year a portion of those funds will be directed to St.
Mary's.
"We are strongly committed
to improving the quality of life for children who are
physically, intellectually or economically challenged.
We see this donation to St. Mary's as an investment
in leading-edge care for the most vulnerable segment
of our population - children," says John McNeil,
Executive Director, GIFT.
"The CT Scanner is
very useful in diagnosing illness and injury in children
who arrive at St. Mary's emergency department",
explains Mac Voisin, President of the hospital's Foundation.
"We are so grateful that GIFT has decided to help
fund this innovative technology in the interest of helping
our Region's children".
GIFT
DONATES $75,000 TO FINISH THE EARLSCOURT MERGE WITH
THE CRECHE CAMPAIGN
In
2001, GIFT made an incredibly generous $100,000 three-year
commitment to the Girls Connection which is the largest
pledge they have every received from a foundation. Upon
hearing that Earlscourt was to merge with The Creche
and still $75,000 short of their $1.7 million campaign,
GIFT donated the $75,000 to finish the campaign.
GIFT President
Bob Brema has long been a supporter of the Girls Connection.
He states "Earlscourt Child & Family Centre
is helping children that others ignore. After meeting
the staff, it became clear that their enthusiasm and
expertise was second to none. If GIFT's financial support
allowed the Earlscourt professionals to continue to
help a few more smiling young faces, then the decision
was obvious. GIFT is pleased to have a very small part
in the ground breaking work done by the Earlscourt Girls
Connection."

Dear Mr. McNeil,
We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the generous grant of $20,000 that your Foundation made to our organization this year for our Send-A-Kid-to-Camp program. Your kindness is truly exceptional. Your grant will make a significant impact on the lives of the children in care.
Our summer camp program provides recreational opportunities for disadvantaged children to experience healthy development and to help dispel the fear, mistrust and abuse that have affected their lives. For some children, going to summer camp is the only opportunity they have to reconnect with siblings separated by Foster care.
Thank you again for your support and generosity.

The Douglas Thompson Children’s Wish Fund grants the wishes of terminally ill children. In the last year, we have granted wishes to three young children in our community. Your donation will ensure that children in our area have help to fulfill a particular wish.
As consumers we appreciate the opportunity to participate in your Cash For Kids coupon promotion each year. We are grateful for your community support.
